Wiri Lesson NotesPre-Test Checks

• Check fuel level before the driving test
  
• Ensure the registration (rego) is current
  

Road Position

• Keep left on wide roads
  
• Maintain correct lane position at all times
  

Observation & Awareness

• Increase your searching — move your head, not just your eyes
  
• Stay aware of what’s ahead, beside, and behind you
  

Left Turns

• Angle the vehicle correctly before turning
  
• Stay in your lane
  
• Check for bus and cycle lanes
  
• Enter bus/cycle lanes only where lines are dashed (about 50 metres before the turn)
  

Right Turns

• Do not cut corners
  
• Stay on your side of the road
  
• For dual-lane right turns, stay in your lane throughout the turn
  

Turning Bays (Left & Right)

• Always use turning bays
  
• Indicate and check your blind spot before entering
  
• Move fully into the bay
  
• Keep indicating while waiting to turn
  

Give Way Signs

• Do not stop unless required
  
• Check both sides carefully
  
• Approach slowly enough to give way if needed
  
• If you cannot see 100 metres in both directions, stop and edge forward safely
  

Flush Medians

• Do not block traffic
  
• Merge into and out of flush medians correctly
  
• Always indicate and check your blind spot
  

Roundabouts

• Indicate when exiting
  
• Look for cover vehicles to help you enter safely
  

Merging & Lane Changing

• Always indicate and check blind spots
  
• Avoid braking hard or unnecessarily
  

On-Ramps

• Use the full length of the on-ramp to build speed
  
• Indicate and check your blind spot
  
• Merge smoothly onto the motorway
  

Off-Ramps

• Check your left blind spot for emergency vehicles and buses
  
• Exit the motorway first
  
• Slow down after exiting — nothing sudden
  

Braking & Speed Control

• Avoid hard braking
  
• Check your centre mirror before slowing
  
• When travelling downhill, stay under the speed limit and cover the brake
  

Blind Corners & Sharp Turns

• Keep left
  
• Drive to the road conditions
  
• Slow down before the corner
  

Parking

• Curbside parking: Indicate and check your blind spot; vehicle must be within 30 cm of the curb
  
• Parallel parking: Always indicate left and check mirrors and blind spots before stopping and when moving out
