Before Your Driving Test
  • Check that your vehicle has a current Registration (Rego) and Warrant of Fitness (WoF).
  • Make sure you have enough fuel for the test.
  • Ensure your windscreen wipers are working correctly.
  • Check that your tyres are in good condition with no damage.
  • Display L Plates on both the front and rear of the vehicle.
Test Centre Information
  • The Pukekohe VTNZ Test Centre is located next to Bridgestone Tyre Centre.
Urban Driving:
This section of the test is generally around the Hospital and Pak'nSave area.

Roadworks & School Zones
  • Watch carefully for temporary 30 km/h roadworks speed limits.
  • Be alert for school zones and reduce your speed when required.

School Buses
  • When passing a stopped school bus that is picking up or dropping off children, reduce your speed to 20 km/h.

Flush Medians
  • Some flush medians in Pukekohe are quite narrow.
  • When turning right from a Give Way or Stop sign, it is often safer not to use the flush median if there isn't enough room.

U-Turns & Three-Point Turns
  • Always indicate right before moving.
  • Check your centre mirror and perform a clear right blind spot check before every movement.
Stop Signs
​You may be required to stop at:
  • Puhitahi Hill Road
  • John Street
  • Ngahere Road
At every stop sign:
  • Come to a complete stop.
  • All four wheels must stop moving.
  • Pause, check carefully in both directions, and move only when it is safe.
Right Turns
  • Do not cut corners.
  • Move toward the centre of the road where appropriate.
  • Stay on your side of the road throughout the turn.

Left Turns
  • Angle the vehicle to match the road before turning.
  • Keep left throughout the turn.
  • Check your left blind spot before turning.

Narrow Roads

  • Keep left where possible.

  • When merging back into the traffic lane, indicate left and check your left blind spot.
  • Accelerate smoothly to match the speed of traffic before merging.
High-Speed Zone B (Bombay)
You may drive towards Bombay, where speed limits change between:
  • 50 km/h
  • 60 km/h
  • 80 km/h
Dual-Lane Roads
  • Be prepared to change lanes when required.
  • Check your centre mirror, indicate, and perform a blind spot check before changing lanes.
  • Avoid driving beside vehicles in your blind spot.
  • Make smooth lane changes and match the speed of traffic.

Following Distance
  • When following trucks, buses, or other slow-moving vehicles, increase your following distance.
  • Double your following and stopping distance, especially on wet roads or when travelling uphill.
  • Stay far enough back so you can see the ground behind the vehicle in front.

Temporary Speed Limits
  • Watch carefully for temporary speed limit signs.
  • Speed limits may reduce suddenly, for example from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.
