Key Points from simulated test

  1. Internal Controls - Seatbelt
  2. Left Turns - angle the car, turn with the road
  3. Before braking / slowing down know what is behind you. Always check your centre mirror.
  4. Narrow Roads - Keep Left
  5. Gap Selection - Look ahead and be ready before the last vehicle passes.
  6. Roundabouts - Angle the car
  7. Moving Off the Road - Indicate, check your centre mirror (behind you) and shoulder check
  8. Lane Changing / Merging - Indicate, check your centre mirror (behind you) and shoulder check
  9. Pedestrians Crossing -  Don’t stop for no reason, check both sides. Look outward
  10. Speed Bumps - Roll over, aim for 20km don’t brake suddenly and know if there is a vehicle behind you.
  11. Focus on Indicting, Mirror Usage and Blind Spot/Shoulder Checks
  12. Don’t speed up, when moving off the road. Let the car roll
  13. Know what is next to you, when moving around parked cars. Blind Spot Checks.
  14. Avoid bottle necks - react earlier be slow and roll through
  15. Parallel Parking - Know what is behind you / Recheck the right side / using the space around you / aim to be under 30cm from the curb.
  16. U-Turn -  Indicate right, check you right side and keep left.
  17. Right Turn - Aim for 20km (Don’t be too slow)
  18. Hand Position - Move your hands, don’t twist when turning.
  19. Shoulder Checks - when moving around parked cars check you blind spot. If all 4 wheels move over the centre line Indicated.
  20. Stop Signs - Stop pause and then move off
  21. Searching - Move your chin when looking around.
  22. Turning - Don’t look while turning. Check before turning.
  23. Roundabout - Angle the car and be ready before.
  24. Hazards - Look outwards 12 seconds
  25. Narrow Roads - Indicate when moving around parked cars
  26. Blind Corners / Sharp Turns - keep left to avoid oncoming cars
  27. Mirror Usage - Check every 10-15 seconds // Know what is behind you
  28. Speed Control - School Zone 40km - During school pickup / drop-off times, when 40km is on or when school kids are present.
  29. Large Trucks - keep your distance, react to other vehicles
  30. Motorways Onramp - Nothing sudden and make a small 2 degree turn, Keep indicating till you are fully in the other lane
  31. Lane Change - Indicate, mirror and check blind spot.
  32. Indicate when you need to change lanes or when turning. Don’t keep your hands on the indicators for no reason.
  33. Greenlight / All Intersection - Check both sides
  34. Don’t be to close to vehicles infront. Keep a safe following distance and stopping distance. Stay back so you can see the road marking.
  35. Lane Change Uphill - don’t brake going uphill

Key Points from Simulated Restricted Test

  1. Hand Position - Move your hands, don’t twist when turning.
  2. Left Turns - angle the car, turn with the road
  3. Right Turns - Don’t cut corners
  4. Moving Off the Road - Indicate, check your centre mirror (behind you) and shoulder check
  5. Before braking / slowing down know what is behind you. Always check your centre mirror.
  6. 3 Point Turn - Stay on the road and check your right blind spot.
  7. Right Turns - Hand Position
  8. Parallel Parking - Know what is behind you / Recheck the right side / using the space around you / aim to be under 30cm from the curb.
  9. Right Turn - Flush Medium, don’t turn to sharply
  10. Green Light / All Intersections - Check both sides
  11. U-Turn -  Indicate right, check you right side and keep left.
  12. Don’t be to close to vehicles infront. Keep a safe following distance and stopping distance. Stay back so you can see the road marking.

Don't ride the clutch around corners:
For example if you are coming up to a right turn and you can see its clear, you going into second gear but keep the clutch in all the way through the turn. (Riding the clutch though the turn is the same as coasting in neutral around corners)

Don't change gears around corners:
Only change gears when the car is straight roads.

Don't excessive using gears to slow down:
For example if you are driving in 4th gear (60km) and you drop down into 2nd gear (20km) and let go of the clutch (excessive) to slow down.

If you do 4th, 3rd and then 2nd gear, that will be fine.

Don't use wrong gears:
Taking off in 3rd or 2nd gear when starting to move or in high speed zones change from 4th into 3rd and not 5th gear

Common Errors for October 2017 running through Mt Wellington / Sylvia Park VTNZ Restricted and Full and Overseas Conversion Driving Test. From start to finish all tested overlapped.
Leaving the Carpark:
  1. Angle parking let the car roll out, in REVERSE (Not Neutral)
  2. Before moving back, turn your head and look back, Don't just use the mirrors
  3. Indicate before moving
  4. Look out for other learner driver backing out
  5. Use the space around you and keep on your side of the road (oneway street)
Duallanes - Changing Lanes and Merging:
  1. Keep in your lane and look ahead for merging traffic and parked cars
  2. Be prepared to change lanes
  3. Don't drive in other vehicles blind slot
  4. Don't move suddenly left or right
  5. Don't brake / slow down for no reason
  6. Don't change lanes near intersections or when other vehicles are turning or changing lanes
Dont Rush / Nothing Sudden
  1. Look out for Hazards car, people and animals
U-Turn / 3 Point Turns:
  1. Indicate and Check your Blind Spot
  2. Keep left and use the space around you
  3. Recheck your blind spot
  4. Look at the yellow triangles on the road (Fire Hydrants) keep on the let off them.
Intersections (Ped-X, Traffic Lights, Roundabout and Controlled Cross Roads)
  1. Check both sides, even if you have the right of way
  2. Look for Police Cars, Fire Engines and Ambulances
  3. Green lights will always change, be ready before
Dual Lane Roundabout - ​Right and Left Turn​
  1. Angling the car to the left, will make it easier to turn left, right and go straight at roundabouts.
  2. Indicate out and always check both sides [Refer to lesson notes: You are going to give way to vehicles on your right but, they will give way to vehicles on there right and so on back to you]
  3. Stay in your lane
  4. Comfortable speed - Aim for 20km
  5. Look at the indicators of the other vehicles and check which lane is going were?

Right Turns
  1. Keep on your side and don't be too wide
  2. Don't cut corners
Stop Signs
  1. You have to fully stop
  2. Stop, wait and then go
  3. You can also fail if you wait after the full stop for more then 5seconds if it is safe to move
Keeping Left
  1. You can drive over empty bus stops.
  2. Wide Roads keep reasonably to the left
Braking
  1. Don't Brake Hard
  2. Before braking know who is behind you - Check you center mirror
Turn Right and Left:
  1. ​Dont rush, look ahead and be ready before the last car passes to move out.
  2. You will be driving at the speed limit, presume everyone else are running late and will being rushing.
  3. Check both sides 100metres / 3 lamp posts.
  4. Know where everyone else should go.
Moving on and off:
  1. Release your hand brake
  2. Indicate before moving on /off 
  3. Check your blind spot before moving
  4. You don't want to feel the car moving left or right
  5. Keep indicating till you have fully stopped
Giveway Left Turn at Traffic Lights:
Angle the car to the left and go a bit wide to make a safe turn in the left lane
